How to make spray starch for perfectly creased cowboy jeans

Did you know that denim jeans were first invented in 1873 by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis for a customer who wanted sturdy pants that would withstand hard work? They quickly became a symbol of the working man after that. However, what first became popular with hardworking cowboys and men laying railroad ties or looking for gold in the West, has now become a staple of the American wardrobe. Worn by men and women, adults and children, for dress, work or play, they are probably the most essential clothing item in everyone’s closet. But how do you get them to keep looking as if you just bought them? Or have you ever looked at a true cowboy and wondered, “How did he get his jeans to still look so good after a hard day’s work?” It’s all about the crease! Creasing jeans and making them look fresh has never been easier than with Simpli Starch® spray starch! With Simpli Starch® , you control the thickness of your starch and the level of crease.

All Things Needed (Ingredients):

  • Simpli Starch®
  • Spray bottle
  • Pants hanger
  • Iron
  • Favorite jeans

Instructions (Option 1) using spray bottle:

  1. Fill the spray bottle with cold water.
  2. Add 2-parts Simpli Starch® to 16 parts water to make full strength spray starch.
  3. Shake the bottle vigorously until completely mixed (leave space for mixing).
  4. Fill up to 22-parts water for medium strength starch or as desired. Shake well before each use.
  5. IRON LIKE A PRO: For superior results evenly spray the inside of the entire fabric, flip back to the exterior to iron. For additional stiffness spray the exterior of the fabric and iron again.
  6. For best results, iron at recommended heat settings (low to medium heat). Always allow spray starch to fully absorb into the fabric for a few minutes before ironing.

Instructions (Option 2) In your washing machine:

  1. Add Simpli Starch® directly to the last rinse and spin cycle of your wash as follows:
  • Add ¼ cup for light starch (linens, sheets)
  • Add ½ cup for medium starch (shirts, uniforms)
  • Add ¾ cup for heavy starch (drapes, comforters, jeans)
  1. Add extra for top loading machines, if necessary.
  2. Move clothes immediately to the dryer and dry as directed.
  3. To iron after drying hold the jeans at the waist facing you, with the fly in the middle. Pinch a place on the jeans in the middle of the leg and smooth out the leg to make a crease in front of the pant leg and in back. Do the same on the other pant leg. Lay the pants on their side.
  4. Iron each pant leg on both sides using the Steam setting. Spend the extra time and attention ironing in the creases on both legs.
