How to hang wallpaper or fabric to the walls with starch

Even though you may be renting an apartment or a house, you still want to make it your own and add your own signature touches when decorating. Yet, you may not be allowed to permanently change very much. Therefore, removable or peel & stick wallpaper has become a hot trend in urban decorating and for DIY projects.  However, why be limited to the color palettes or patterns that come in removable or peel & stick wallpaper?  There are some prints that only come in a non-pasted wallpaper or fabric form that you’d like to capture as well.  Now, simply by using Simpli Starch®, you can apply real non-pasted wallpaper or fabric to a rental wall for that splash of color or striking statement wall.  And when you need to move or get tired of it, it is easily removable.

All Things Needed (Ingredients):

  • Fabric or non-pasted wallpaper
  • Paint tray
  • Paint roller
  • Simpli Starch® in liquid form
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
  • Utility knife
  • Duct tape

Instructions:

  1. Clean wall to ensure adhesion.
  2. If using fabric, prewash fabric to remove the finish and prevent dye from bleeding onto the wall.
  3. Prepare liquid Simpli Starch®:
    1. Pour 8 cups of water into a bowl.
    2. Add 1 cup of Simpli Starch to the water in the bowl or 1-part Simpli Starch® to 8 parts water.
    3. Mix vigorously in circular motion making sure to mix in the bottom until starch thickens into smooth liquid.
  4. Cut a piece of fabric or wallpaper several inches longer than the height of the wall.
  5. Tape the first piece of fabric or wallpaper onto the wall leaving extra fabric or wallpaper at the top.
  6. Pour starch into the paint tray.  Saturate paint roller in the liquid starch mixture.
  7. Roll starch onto the wall one section at a time, starting at the top.
  8. Smooth fabric or wallpaper with hand to remove air bubbles.
  9. If using fabric, roll starch on top of the fabric to saturate it, but not to the point that it is dripping.
  10. Line up pattern with next piece. Repeat steps 5-9.
  11. When dry, cut excess fabric or wallpaper with a utility knife.
  12. Touch up edges with a sponge dipped in liquid Simpli Starch®.
  13. When you are ready to move or you simply are tired of the pattern, apply warm water with a sponge to the wall to remove the wallpaper or fabric.
  14. Clean up the bare wall with dish soap and warm water and a sponge.
